It is with pleasure that I recommend Banderas Bay Women’s Shelter (BBWS) as a charity to support in Puerto Vallarta.
When I retired to Puerto Vallarta over 6 years ago, I immediately research charities to volunteer with. I retired for a career of over 30 years in nonprofit management in the United States and my criteria was clear. I have volunteered as a fundraiser for BBWS for approximately 5 years for the following reasons:
- The values and mission of the organization are clear.
- Accountability and transparency are present in all their activities.
- The organization has a wonderful reputation in the community and enjoys widespread support from community leaders.
- BBWS collaborates with government officials, law enforcement and other women’s shelters across the nation.
- The Shelter is in compliance with all local, state and federal laws including all financial guidelines, and in fact now enjoys partial funding from the government.
- The Director, David Zude, is a compassionate, intelligent leader which is essential in such in running an organization with such a complicated mission with families that are coming from such horrible circumstances.
Along with a small group of community leaders, we have been raising money for the Shelter for many years through numerous small fundraisers and one large signature event each year, What a Drag. In March we will produce the 5th annual What a Drag event.
What a Drag is currently the largest fundraiser for a single organization in the city of Puerto Vallarta. The hilarious event raised approximately $930,000 pesos last year alone and has raise approximately $2.4 million pesos over four years. We expect to exceed $1 million pesos this year.
What a Drag is a beauty pageant featuring heterosexual men in “drag”. It is described as the most hilarious event in town, the “must attend” event each year. Two United States foundations have contributed and matched contributions each year.
I strongly recommend choosing Banderas Bay Women’s Shelter as your charity. You’ll make a huge difference in the lives of the women and children who come from the most abusive homes imaginable.

I have worked with David Zude since he and his wife purchased the site where the shelter for abused families stands today. Along with the Zude´s money, money donated from the U.S. and money donated by individuals and merchants here in Puerto Vallarta, a beautiful home has been built in Nayarit to shelter abused families from Jalisco and Nayarit. These are families where the husband has attempted or threatened to kill the wife or their children or both.
At the shelter, David and the staff offer the families protection, remedy from health issues, counselling, job training, and basic needs of clothing and meals. Tracking of the families who have left the shelter has shown that only one victim has returned to her husband and that couple is in counselling.
David works well with the Mexican government, is entirely transparent and is supported and respected by the community here in Puerto Vallarta. This is a VERY worthy cause to support with your time and your funds!

En esto momentos me encuentro en un refugio y quiero decirles a quien vaya dirigida esta carta que en este lugar hacen una muy bonita labor todas las personas de las diferentes áreas, tanto como la directora y fundado de esta institución.
En lo personal estoy muy contenta, aquí he aprendido muchas cosas que son buenas para mí y mis hijos, yo en lo personal recomiendo mucho este lugar, es una institución muy completa. Te ayuda a muchas cosas, yo en estos momentos me encuentro ya finalizando mi proceso y me gustaría que, así como yo romí con la cadena de la violencia, así también muchas mujeres lo sigan haciendo, yo creo que fuera bueno que se promovieran este tipo de instituciones porque no hay muchas personas que todavía no saben que existen, lo menciono porque yo no sabía que existieran.
Muchas gracias a todas las personas que hacen posible toda esta labor tan hermosa, tanto como lo que están aquí dentro como todas las personas que lo hacen desde afuera que Dios los llene de bendiciones por todo lo que hacen por ya no vivir más con Violencia

Mi nombre es Lizbeth y tengo 29 años, fui víctima de violencia durante varios años, fue al tomar la decisión de pedir ayuda como llegué al refugio “Casa Esperanza” junto con mis dos hijas de 7 y 3 años, además de estar embarazada de alto riesgo de 8 semanas. Fui usuaria del 19 de julio al 05 de octubre del presente año.
Mi estado emocional estaba desequilibrado, llegué llena de miedos e inseguridades, jamás imaginé que habían enviado a un lugar tan maravilloso, donde me encontraría con un ejército de ángeles, que con paciencia y dedicación de ayudaron a recuperarme, recibimos tanto mis hijas como yo atención personalizada por Enfermeras, psicólogas, trabajo social y educativo, así como asesoría legal. Fue dura enfrentarme a mí misma, pero valió la pena todo lo aprendido, ahora puedo decir que soy una mujer empoderada, capaz de tomar decisiones asertivas, fue gracias a este generoso lugar que pude recuperarme más rápidamente, de no haber llegar a tiempo dudo mucho que hoy en día estuviera tan bien como lo estoy,
Considero que si más mujeres tuvieran acceso a este tipo de instituciones la violencia de género se podrá erradicar poco a poco hasta alcanzar el equilibrio de nuestra sociedad. La importancia de la existencia de estos refugios es en definitiva necesaria, ojalá más mujeres tomen la decisión de poner fin a su sufrimiento. Por todo lo anterior recomiendo ampliamente a toda mujer en situación de violencia se animen a ingresar a “Casa Esperanza” un refugio que te puede salvar la vida.
